1/12/2023 0 Comments Dedalus and icarus![]() ![]() ![]() This superhuman was Theseus, the son of King Aegeus of Athens. Well, that’s not quite true actually, as one of the young men, not only found and killed the Minotaur, but also found his way out again. It goes without saying that none of them was ever seen again. They would then wander, sometimes only for hours but sometimes for many days before, somewhere in the pitch black tunnels, they would encounter the Minotaur. One by one they would be forced to enter the labyrinth. Every year, he demanded that Athens send him a tribute of seven young men and seven young women and these would be sacrificed to satisfy the creature’s hunger. King Minos had come up with his own special way of satisfying the Minotaur’s hunger. It had almost unbelievable strength and was constantly hungry – hungry for the flesh of humans. Standing twice as high as any man, the Minotaur had horns, as long as a man’s arm, with sharp points, on which it skewered its victims. It was to contain the Minotaur, a huge beast, half man, half bull. This giant maze served one simple purpose. One of his first tasks was to construct a huge labyrinth, a vast underground maze of tunnels which twisted and turned in every possible direction, so that, on entering the labyrinth, a person would very quickly become lost and would be unable to find their way out again. His incredible inventions and constructions were known and admired throughout many lands and when he arrived in Crete, many years earlier, King Minos was happy to welcome him to his land and quickly began to make use of his talents. Only a short time ago Daedalus was being hailed as the great architect, the skilled inventor, the master craftsman. ![]() He cast his mind back even further, to the day when he realised that his own life and that of his son were in great danger. “Now, keep your mind on what we have to do and remember, not too high, not too close to the sun.”ĭaedalus thought back to the moment, a few days before, when he had thought up the plan that would help them escape - not only from the labyrinth but from the kingdom of King Minos as well. “When my feet are back on solid ground and that island is many, many miles behind us, then you will see me smile,” Daedalus yelled back. "Smile, we’ve done it, we’ve escaped and we’re free." "Come along, Father," he shouted over the sound of the wind rushing past them. Icarus glanced over at his father and grinned. For here he was now, flying alongside his father, Daedalus, as they left the island of Crete behind them and travelled on towards their freedom. It was hard to believe it but the plan had worked. Beating his wings harder and harder, Icarus soared up into the sky and out over the Aegean Sea. ![]() 1/12/2023 0 Comments Fortnite update notea![]() Fixed an issue that made the Battle Bus appear to quickly fly off the map after jumping from it.Fixed an issue where some pre-placed wooden archways could not be destroyed by player built structures.Fixed an issue where swinging the pickaxe could cause movement stuttering.Fixed an issue where destroying a building from under an enemy wouldn’t award kill credit.Fixed cases where pickups moved erratically when sliding down slopes. This caused players to “phase through” the structure.Fixed an issue that would cause player built structures to appear intact for a few seconds after eliminating an enemy and destroying the structure at the same time. ![]() On the starting island, you can now see other players (and player-created structures) about three times further away than before.Fall distance is now shown in the elimination feed when a player is forced to fall by an opponent.Knocking a player off the island will award elimination credit like normal fall damage.Damage numbers are now visible when spectating a player.Slightly reduced the hitbox size of player hands. ![]() This change affects all weapons, except for the Rocket Launcher and Grenade Launcher.Headshots from below that are blocked by a body part (legs, torso, hands, shoulders, arms) will do normal damage, except for impacts very close to your character’s head. ![]() You'll be credited headshot damage instead of normal damage.

Of course, that process becomes much easier as you memorize and become more comfortable with the commands. ![]() I personally found the software much more useful for composing short snippets of text that typically don’t require much formatting or a deep train of thought that might be interrupted by formatting commands, like emails, Tweets, reminders, lists, and brainstorming sessions. Basic commands seem easy enough to remember while dictating- Caps on, close quote, comma, ‘apostrophe ess’, insert, correct, new line- but in practice having to speak commands to properly format a sentence as you dictate takes away from the freedom of being able to capture your thoughts as you speak freely. Dragon Dictate won’t let you plow through a 5000 word piece nearly as quick as you’d type it, mainly because learning the commands necessary for formatting and corrections is like learning a new language. So will I be writing my articles for 9to5Mac by simply speaking and having Dragon dictate from now on? Nope. There’s no need to speak slowly and carefully to make sure every word is recognized, and there’s no waiting around for the software to catch up to what you’re saying. If you haven’t tried full-blown dictation software like Dragon in recent years like myself, you’ll truly be amazed at how precise the program is at dictating error-free text as you speak naturally. After reading a bit of text and walking through a brief tutorial (about 10 minutes total), the app is remarkably accurate at understanding your voice and dictating speech consistently. When people think Nuance and Dragon Dictate they typically think speech to text dictation features. While half decent dictation features come with every Mac (and are powered by Nuance’s technology), the voice recognition features you get with latest version of Nuance’s Dragon Dictate for Mac go well beyond simply dictating speech to text. They simply aren’t accurate and consistent enough to replace our tried and trusted mouse and keyboard or touchscreen. There’s good reason too: the voice recognition features built into our devices have always had the reputation of being half-baked. For many of us, using voice recognition technology wasn’t even a consideration until features like dictation and Siri arrived on our iPhones and iPads. Using our voice to control computers has never really taken off. ![]() 1/10/2023 0 Comments Keep it up![]() ‘I needed something the university wasn’t offering’Īt the start of every school year, Anne Marie Albano, director of the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CUCARD), says she’s inundated with texts and phone calls from students who struggle with the transition to college life. But especially in rural areas, where options for off-campus care are limited, universities are feeling pressure to do more. Many private-sector treatment programs are stepping in to fill that gap, at least for families who can afford steep fees that may rise above $10,000 and may not be covered by health insurance. Even if students ask for and receive help, not all cases can be treated on campus. “It’s a very different job than it was 10 years ago,” says Lisa Adams Somerlot, president of the American College Counseling Association and director of counseling at the University of West Georgia.Īs colleges try to meet the growing demand, some students are slipping through the cracks due to long waits for treatment and a lasting stigma associated with mental health issues. ![]() Some counselors say they are experiencing “battle fatigue” and are overwhelmed by the increase in students asking for help. The average university has one professional counselor for every 1,737 students - fewer than the minimum of one therapist for every 1,000 to 1,500 students recommended by the International Association of Counseling Services. And student government leaders at several schools have enacted new student fees that direct more funding to counseling centers.īut most counseling centers are working with limited resources. Pennsylvania State University allocated roughly $700,000 in additional funding for counseling and psychological services in 2017, citing a “dramatic increase” in the demand for care over the past 10 years. Ohio State University added a dozen mental health clinicians during the 2016-17 academic year and has also launched a counseling mobile app that allows students to make an appointment, access breathing exercises, listen to a playlist designed to cheer them up, and contact the clinic in case of an emergency. Virginia Tech University has opened several satellite counseling clinics to reach students where they already spend time, stationing one above a local Starbucks and embedding others in the athletic department and graduate student center. More than 2,700 students have opted in, and counselors have followed up with more than 250 who were identified as being at risk for severe depression, exhibiting manic behavior or having suicidal thoughts. For the first time last fall, UCLA offered all incoming students a free online screening for depression. To prevent students from burning out and dropping out, colleges across the country - where health centers might once have left meaningful care to outside providers - are experimenting with new measures. “It was probably the loneliest experience.”Īs midterms begin in March, students’ workload intensifies, the wait time for treatment at counseling centers grows longer, and students who are still struggling to adjust to college consider not returning after the spring or summer breaks. “When you’re going through that and you’re looking around on campus, it doesn’t seem like anyone else is going through what you’re going through,” she says. In October of her sophomore year, she withdrew from school on medical leave, feeling defeated. The soccer team wouldn’t allow her to play after she missed too many practices, so she left the team. She started skipping classes and meals, avoiding friends and professors, and holing up in her dorm. ![]() At times, she found herself crying uncontrollably, unable to leave her room, only to feel normal again in 30 minutes. If you’re after a charger that can be mounted under your bonnet, the BCDC Classic is the way to go. In addition, quality DC to DC battery chargers are designed to also work with any type of alternator or vehicle voltage as it can operate and sense a wide voltage range. Which is becoming increasingly common in modern vehicles. An In-vehicle battery charger applies the correct voltage level to achieve a full state of charge, while controlling the amount of current flowing into the battery, so that it doesn’t charge too quickly and cause unwanted damage.Īn In-vehicle battery charger may also be necessary when you have to install the secondary battery away from the alternator due to space restrictions under bonnet, as a DC-DC battery charger can overcome voltage drop from long distances. Therefore, a DC-DC battery charger is recommended as it is designed to effectively charge a secondary battery to 100% ensuring the prolonged life of your secondary battery. You wouldn’t use diesel in your petrol engine and on the higher end of the scale you would be better off supplying high octane fuel to a performance petrol engine. Providing the correct charge to a battery is a bit like filling your tank with the correct fuel for your engine. Deep cycle batteries, which are predominantly used as secondary batteries, generally require charging at higher voltages which mean if they are being charged solely by the alternator they're often left undercharged. The problem with using your vehicle’s alternator as the main charging source for a secondary battery is that a majority of vehicle alternators after 2010 do not put out more than around 14V after driving the vehicle for 10 – 25 minutes. Some even accept additional power sources such as solar. Generally, a DC to DC battery charger is going to offer more flexibility for your dual battery setup, not only in terms of correct charging for your specific battery, but also suitability for different alternator types, installation location, and amp size. ![]() If your setup meets none of these criteria, the next level up is an In-vehicle battery charger, also know as a DC-DC battery charger. This type of setup is recommended for vehicles that have a fixed vehicle alternator, can be installed under the bonnet and if you’re on a budget. ![]() Therefore the pump feeds both batteries at the same time. Once the pump (alternator) fills the start battery to a point (13.2v) the isolator detects this and turns on, allowing the feed going into the first battery to pass onto the secondary battery. This will stop any loads connected to the auxiliary battery from also draining the battery.Ī good analogy for this is to think of the Battery Isolator as a tap between the batteries and the alternator is a pump feeding the start battery. When the engine is turned off, and therefore the alternator is no longer running, once the start battery drops below 12.7 volts the isolator will disengage the secondary battery. The Smart Start SBI REDARC's Smart Battery Isolator It will do this by sensing battery voltage, and when the start battery reaches 13.2 volts on a 12-volt system, it will connect and start charging the secondary battery. Smart Battery Isolators have been used for a number of years and offer an effective approach for using your vehicle’s alternator to charge the second battery whilst the vehicle is running.
